In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, nursing is no exception. As medical advancements and patient care needs continue to expand, so do the opportunities for nurses to specialize in unique and emerging fields. In this blog post, we’ll delve into some of the up-and-coming nursing specialties, shedding light on their roles, responsibilities, and the educational paths required to excel. Whether you’re a seasoned nurse looking to explore new horizons or a nursing student considering your career options, read on to discover the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.

1. Telehealth Nursing:

Role and Responsibilities: Telehealth nurses bridge the gap between technology and patient care. They provide remote patient monitoring, conduct virtual assessments, and offer patient education through telecommunication platforms. Their role has become increasingly vital during the pandemic, ensuring patients receive quality care from the comfort of their homes.

Educational Requirements: To become a telehealth nurse, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is often required. Additional certifications in telehealth or informatics can provide a competitive edge.

2. Genetics Nursing:

Role and Responsibilities: Genetics nurses work closely with patients and families to assess genetic risk factors, provide genetic counseling, and guide individuals through genetic testing and interpretation. They play a critical role in helping patients understand their genetic predispositions and make informed healthcare decisions.

Educational Requirements: Genetics nursing usually requires a BSN and a Master’s degree in genetics nursing or a related field. Board certification as a Genetics Clinical Nurse Specialist (GCNS) is recommended.

3. Informatics Nursing:

Role and Responsibilities: Informatics nurses merge healthcare and technology by managing electronic health records (EHRs), optimizing data flow, and ensuring patient information is accurate and accessible. They facilitate efficient communication between healthcare providers, improve patient outcomes, and enhance the overall healthcare experience.

Educational Requirements: A BSN is often required, along with certification in nursing informatics. Further education, such as a Master’s or Doctoral degree, can advance one’s career in informatics.

4. Transplant Nursing:

Role and Responsibilities: Transplant nurses play a crucial role in coordinating and providing care for patients undergoing organ or tissue transplantation. They assess patients, educate them about the transplant process, and monitor their progress post-transplant.

Educational Requirements: A BSN is typically required, followed by specialization in transplant nursing through certification programs.

5. Geriatric Nursing:

Role and Responsibilities: As the population ages, geriatric nurses are in high demand. They specialize in caring for elderly patients, addressing unique health challenges such as chronic conditions, mobility issues, and cognitive impairments. Geriatric nurses ensure the well-being and quality of life for older adults.

Educational Requirements: A BSN is a common starting point, followed by specialization through certifications like Gerontological Nursing Certification (RN-BC).

6. Forensic Nursing:

Role and Responsibilities: Forensic nurses combine healthcare and legal expertise to provide care to victims of trauma, abuse, and violence. They collect evidence, support victims through emotional trauma, and collaborate with law enforcement and legal teams.

Educational Requirements: A BSN is the foundational requirement, followed by specialized training in forensic nursing. Some roles may require additional certifications.

7. Palliative Care Nursing:

Role and Responsibilities: Palliative care nurses focus on improving the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses. They provide comfort care, manage symptoms, and address psychosocial and emotional needs.

Educational Requirements: A BSN is the starting point, with additional training in palliative care through certifications and continuing education.

Incorporating advanced educational requirements, certifications, and hands-on experience, these nursing specialties offer exciting opportunities for career growth and specialized patient care. Stay attuned to the evolving landscape of healthcare, and consider how these emerging fields align with your passion and skills as a nurse. Pursuing specialization can open doors to new challenges, enhanced patient care, and a fulfilling nursing journey.

How to Remove Your Makeup – Black Woman Edition

I Know, You’re Tired…

I know, you’re tired, and the last thing you want to do is remove a full face of makeup, but I challenge you to remember that your skin is underneath that full face beat, and it just wants to BREATHE.

The health of your skin is integral to who you are. Let’s focus on revealing healthy, radiant skin – a reflection of the beauty inside.

Let’s start with oil cleansing. Using an oil-based cleanser will help you remove any oil-based impurities and dirt. This step should really remove majority of your makeup. The best part is that you can remove your makeup easily, while being gentle with your skin.

Make sure to apply the product to dry skin, work it in, then add water to emulsify the product. It should turn milky and then rinse off clean.

I don’t suggest make up wipes for this step because you may tug on your skin with a wipe, leading to irritation and inflammation.

Oil cleanser will allow you to remove the makeup while still being gentle on your skin.

Take your time.

Don’t tug on your skin.

It will thank you.

Two of my favorite cleansing balms:

Using micellar water may be key for your edges. Chances are you don’t want to ruin your protective style by washing too close to your hairline.

If you’re like me, you’ll usually wrap your hair before you wash your face.

This matters because makeup & oil left around your hairline can lead to breakouts. Especially on your forehead.

So it’s very important to follow your double cleanse with a targeted cleanse for the hairline, that you can use to remove leftover product, without messing up your hairstyle.

I usually just apply a generous amount of micellar water to a cotton pad, then use it to carefully clean around my hairline.

After this, I suggest cleansing your skin with your water-based cleanser. This way you ensure that your skin is properly cleansed of water-based impurities and ready to absorb your skin care products.

For a suggestion on a gentle water-based cleanser:

Finish off your skin care routine with whatever products you desire. I tend to use a BHA toner on days where I wear makeup. This helps me to prevent a break out.

Brightening Niacinamide ~ Why the Ordinary Isn’t the Answer

Fan of the Ordinary’s 10% Niacinamide and 1% zinc serum? Makes sense, it’s great for acne-prone skin because it offers the oil control from niacinamide and the anti-inflammation benefits that zinc can bring. My main problem with this serum is the PILLING.

Pilling is when a product rolls on your skin rather than sinking in. Personally, because this product pills so much, I feel like I never receive the benefits (even though it is a great price point).

Shop the Ordinary:

PURITO – Galacto Niacin 97 Power Essence

Want all the benefits, and none of the problems? Well, you’re going to love this product from Purito. This 5% niacinamide is gentle, but effective. Niacinamide is known for it’s ability to lighten hyperpigmentation (like post acne dark spots) and reduce any redness or irritation.

This active ingredient sits in a base of Galactoyces Ferment Filtrate, which helps to brighten and hydrate the skin. This product really sinks into the skin effortlessly, leaving it hydrated and plump.

NO PILLING.

Product Claims:
